Ambulatory Care Medicine ST1

Ref: 141| Posted: 6th Jan 2020

The ambulatory care centre treats adults patients with medical conditions who need same-day emergency treatment that does not require an overnight stay.

Patients are referred by their GP or from other parts of the hospital (it is not a walk-in unit). Referring patients to the ambulatory care centre means they don’t have to spend hours waiting in A&E and they get the treatment they need sooner. This reduces pressure on the hospital’s emergency department and avoids unnecessary hospital admissions.

The centre carries out scheduled tests such as x-ray and ultrasound, with results reviewed the same day by specialist consultants. Treatments and procedures such as blood transfusions and injections for severe pain are also available.

Staffed by consultants, nurses, doctors and healthcare assistants, the centre has several consulting rooms.
